Penampang: The State level Sugandoi Kaamatan singing competition will be held on May 25 this year.
Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) Supreme Council member cum Organising Committee Chairman Jeoffrey Ekol said the event will be officiated by KDCA President cum State level Kaamatan Celebration Committee Chairman Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan.
It will be held at the HongKod Koisaan hall starting from 6pm, he said during a press conference on Thursday.
According to Jeoffrey, this year’s Sugandoi will be the Silver Jubilee of the State level event.
He said as such the format will be different this year as the 10 Sugandoi finalists will also be asked to sing new songs created by the State level Sugandoi Kaamatan 2012.
“There will be two songs with one song newly composed by our committee. The reason for this is because we want this event to be remembered by the finalists and it is also in conjunction with KDCA’s goals to promote Kadazandusun via songs.
“We also want to encourage local song composers to compose new Kadazandusun songs as we are not happy with the amount of Kadazandusun songs coming out of Radio Television Malaysia (RTM).”
He said there will be three categories; Sugandoi Dazanak (children 13 and under), Songkotoun (veterans) and Kaamatan.
“The closing date for registration will be May 17 for Dazanak, May 18 for Songkotuon and the 19 for Kaamatan. Ten finalists will be chosen for Dazanak, seven for Songkotuon and 10 for Kaamatan.
“The organisers will also sponsor the 10 finalists to record an album based on the new single songs that they will sing in the competition.”
