KOTA KINABALU: A Kaamatan cultural diversity rendezvous will be held for the first time to showcase the sub-ethnic tribes of Sabah through food, song, dance and music.
The festival starts on Thursday at the Kadazandusun Cultural Association cultural village. Each house will hold its own mini festival.

“The rendezvous will start at the Rungus longhouse, where Deputy Chief Minister and Huguan Siou (Kadazan paramount leader) Datuk Seri Joseph Pairin Kitingan will open it,” said organising chairman Dr Benedict Topin.

The Rungus longhouse will hold a coconut festival, featuring products made from coconuts. In the Tobilung house, visitors can enjoy the maize festival and sample dishes made from the grain.

The Papar Tongunggak festival will feature cultural artefacts, while the Tambunan will feature a layoh (ginger) and poring (bamboo) festival.

“Other events include the Lotud Monginomulok (rice-leavening) ceremony, the guol (yam) and koningau (cinnamon) festival at the Lobu house, and the rumbio (sago palm) festival at the Dusun Tatana house.

“At the Tindal house, there will be a punti, or banana festival, showcasing banana dishes and a Monong-lumaag, or life-renewal and blessing ceremony.”

The Bisaya house will feature a kulintangan (traditional gongs) festival.

The Penampang Kadazan house will showcase the Momohobok ceremony and pineapple festival.

The Liwan house will have a cabbage festival while the Murut house will have the ever-popular Lansaran, or local trampoline.

The Murut magunatip dance and blowpipe will be the highlights at the Murut house.

The Kuijau Keningau house will feature Kadazan food and local brews.

The rendezvous is one of many activities held in conjunction with the harvest festival or Pesta Kaamatan, which culminates on Friday and Saturday.
