Kota Kinabalu: Contestants for the Unduk Ngadau 2009 checked into the Le Meridien Wednesday brimming with confidence and hope in their quest to vie for the honour of becoming the Unduk Ngadau.

The third floor of the hotel was a beehive of activity as 41 beauties from various districts, accompanied by family members, came in full traditional attire.

Organising chairperson, Jornah Mozihim, said the event this year, the highlight of a month-long Pesta Kaamatan, would see several surprises.

"The organising committee has invited 10 former Unduk Ngadaus to parade evening gowns from a Kuala Lumpur bridal shop," she said.

Expressing delight with the 100 per cent representation of contestants, she said that during the Sodop Unduk Ngadau dinner at Hongkod Koisaan at 6pm on Thursday, Miss Malaysia-Universe Deborah Henry would be making a special appearance.

Local singers such as Abu Bakar Ella and Akademi Fantasia graduate Felix Agus would also be performing.

Coming from a different background and ethnic group but with one aim - to win the title of State Unduk Ngadau - the 41 lasses would be given a tour of the State Museum on Saturday.

They would also be required to attend a motivational and educational seminar and a grooming and make-up session.

Traditionally, they are required to stay in a hotel provided by the organisers until the Unduk Ngadau contest is over.

On Sunday, 15 finalists will be chosen after the first round and seven after the second round before the ultimate queen and runners-up are chosen.

They would be grilled on their knowledge and ability to answer questions.
The legendary Huminodun is said to possess good character, personality, beauty and values but is also knowledgeable.

On other developments, Jornah said the table tickets for the Sodop Unduk Ngadau dinner at Hongkod Koisaan on Thursday is sold out.

"However, we still have gallery tickets available at the entrance on that day," she said. All proceeds from the gallery tickets would be donated to the Sabah Thallaesemia Association.

She hoped the public would donate generously towards the noble cause.

TELEMOVIE KADAZANDUSUN ?BAMBAAZON? DI RTM TV2 29 MEI 2009 @ 12.30 T/HARI
28 May 2009
Sebarang komen amatlah dialu-alukan. Keterangan lanjut, sila hubungi Cik Jenny Joanis (HP: 0192198488)

Rumah Tradisi di KK Jadi Tarikan Pelancong
24 May 2009
Source: New Sabah Times, 21st May, 2009

Hoping Unduk Ngadau Can Raise RM150,000
15 May 2009

Kota Kinabalu: The State-level Sodop Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan (Gala Nite) Dinner to be held at the Kadazandusun Cultural Association?s (KDCA) Hongkod Koisaan hall in Penampang on May 28 aims to raise RM150,000.

Organising chairperson Dr Azlina Ekat said the amount sought is meant to finance 40 contestants from throughout the State who would be coming to compete for the Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan 2009 title.

She said the organising committee aimed to raise the sum through the sale of tickets at RM3,000, RM2,000 or RM1,000 per table. About 80 per cent of the tables were already sold so far, particularly the RM1,000 per table.

Besides that, she said the committee would also raise some fund for the Sabah Thalassaemia Association during the event, through a certain percentage of tickets sold as well as auction of special T-shirts.

Speaking to reporters in a Press conference at Le Meridien Hotel here Wednesday, Dr Azlina said Deputy Chief Minister-cum-Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Joseph Pairin Kitingan, who is also Huguan Siou (paramount leader) of the Kadazandusun, would be the guest of honour during the Gala Nite that will start at 7pm.

On programmes for the event, she said it would start with a video presentation on the Unduk Ngadau, followed by a cultural dance performance and Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan 2009 Splendour Presentation, a Thalassaemia T-shirt Auction, artiste performances featuring Abu Bakar Ellah, Felix AF and last year?s Unduk Ngadau Jo-Anna Sue Henly Rampas, among others.

There will also be lucky draw (10 prizes for gallery and table ticket holder), special appearance by ex-Unduk Ngadau of the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, as well as special appearance by Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan Reigning Queen.

Pairin?s wife, Datin Genevieve, will also present prizes to winners of subsidiary titles: Tati Tosuau (Miss Friendly) and Tati Topiodo (Miss Natural Beauty). The night will also be highlighted with special appearance by former Miss Malaysia World Deborah Henry, who will be showcasing some fashion collections from Couture Butik, owned by Datin Rahmah Jan Sulaiman Khan.

Najib's Walkabout at Kadazandusun Do
11 May 2009
KUALA LUMPUR: A surprise visit by Datuk Seri Najib Razak to the 14th Harvest Festival added to the festive cheer at Pesta Kaamatan yesterday afternoon. The prime minister dropped by the Putra World Trade Centre to join in the celebration and emphasise that his 1Malaysia concept was not a mere political statement.?It is easy to say this (prime minister for all), but we must add substance to this. That is why I introduced the concept of 1Malaysia,? he said.?Every Malaysian must embark on the journey of realising the concept.?We can be different in so many levels but, most importantly, we are together. ?I am confident we will achieve this concept and when we do, Malaysia will be truly united and prosperous.? The government will do what it can to help everyone.? Najib had only confirmed his attendance at the Harvest Festival, organised by the KadazanDusun Cultural Association (KDCA) of Klang Valley, in the morning.?I was invited by KDCA adviser Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili (science, technology and innovations minister) two days ago but I was only able to confirm my attendance this morning. My presence here is part of my walkabout, which I have embarked on since taking over (as prime minister).? Najib even tried the traditional sumazau dance on stage with KDCA chairman Datuk Seri Joseph Pairin Kitingan and Ongkili. Since Najib?s visit was unexpected, Pairin apologised for not having Najib?s name on the stage backdrop. Najib replied that he did not want his presence to be measured by the beat of the kompang, the rolling out of the red carpet or the stage backdrop that carried his name. Kaamatan @Hongkod 31st May: Highlight of Sabah Fest 2009
11 May 2009
KOTA KINABALU: Rarely seen rituals usually performed by priestesses and healers of the indigenous tribes of Sabah will be the main attraction during the month-long Sabah Fest, to be held in May. [caption id="attachment_376" align="alignleft" width="240" caption="Masidi (2nd from right) points at a poster used to promote the ?Mystical Sabah? event after the press conference yesterday. Standing close to him are Sabah Cultural Board dancers clad in traditional Lotud Dusun, Bajau and Rungus attire.[/caption] Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, Datuk Masidi Manjun said this year?s Sabah Fest, which has been themed ?Mystical Sabah? will showcase the spiritual rituals of the indigenous folks of Sabah, in particular the Dusun-Lotud people from Tuaran. The ?Mystical Sabah? will take place on May 2- 3 at the Magellan Grand Ballroom of the Sutera Habour Resort here. The main attraction during the event is a one-hour show starting at 8pm sharp at the ballroom during the two days. The premier show on May 3 will be attended by the Head of State, Tun Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Ahmadshah Abdullah as well as the Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman. The show will highlight a handful of Sabah?s ethnic groups through a presentation of traditional songs and dances combined with a display of rarely-seen rituals and scenes from their daily lives. At the same time, a special segment on the ?Tamu culture of Sabah? will also be showcased, said Masidi. ?In the olden days, a sacrificial offering is often made before the start of a tamu to ward against any untoward incidents such as cheating or illegal trade being carried out there,? he said. At the same time, visitors to the Sabah Fest will be able to witness skilled craftsmen of Sabah at work during the handicraft exhibition which will be held at the foyer of the Magellan Grand Ballroom from 10am to 10pm. On May 4-11, the Sabah Fest celebrations will be extended to the Sabah Museum Heritage Village whereby visitors will be entertained by various tribes through their traditional performances as well as enjoy the local delicacies. There will also be rarely-seen rituals and rites performed by healers and high priestesses, such as the ?Tumoron? ? a healing ceremony of the Rungus people and a mock wedding display of the Dusun Lotud ethic group, a ceremony known as ?Matod?. The Bajau Kubang community will perform the ?Magpa?gal? a traditional healing ceremony. The grand finale of the Sabah Fest is on May 31 with the Tadau Kaamatan Festival. Masidi said that the Sabah Fest is expected to lure a lot of visitors into the State, including tourists from overseas, particularly from Australia and Brunei. He added that the fest is one of the State?s most anticipated cultural extravaganzas showcasing Sabah?s multiracial society, cultures and traditions.

Unduk Ngadau pageant announced
09 May 2009
6th May, 2009 (New SabahTimes) IN LINE with the Kaamatan harvest festival celebrations this month, Sabah?s Kadazandusun community once again puts together its iconic annual pageant, the Unduk Ngadau, a traditional search for the best female paragon of beauty and grace. Originally held to honour the harvest spirit Huminodun, who selflessly sacrificed herself as an offering to end drought and bring forth great crop harvests to her people, the Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan 2009 adds a new district to its roster of eligible participants. The addition of Tungku brings the number of the pageant?s representatives to 41 this year, a list that frequently draws on various parts of Sabah, Kota Kinabalu and even the Klang Valley. The official harvest festival celebrations are expected to finish by May 23, specifically in Tenom and Kunak. Representatives are encouraged to submit their participation details by then as the closing date for submissions is on May 24. Districts and regions have been requested to send in details as soon as the day after Kaamatan celebrations in their area. The requirements for selection remain similar, with all young Kadazandusun women aged 18 to 25 as of January 1, 2009 being eligible to join. The initial registration for the 41 participants begins on May 27 from 8am to 10pm at a venue to be announced at a later date, where finalists will be fully clad in traditional attire and prepared for a short photo shoot scheduled during the day. Unduk Ngadau 2009?s finalists will be accommodated at the Le Meridien Kota Kinabalu, one of the pageant?s sponsors. A preview night will be held on May 27 hosted by the Huguan Siou, Datuk Seri Panglima Joseph Pairin Kitingan. The event will involve an introduction to the pageant?s principles and expectations by Datin Seri Panglima Genevive Kitingan. The Sodop Unduk Ngadau 2009 gala night is on May 28, which will see the awarding of the pageant?s two subsidiary titles, Miss Photogenic and Miss Friendly. The night also acts as a fundraiser with pledges intended towards the Sabah Thalassaemia Society, in the form of ticket sales amounting to RM20,000. This stands as the Unduk Ngadau?s first attempt at involving a charity in its proceedings. The Unduk Ngadau finals are set for May 31. Prizes for first, second and third place are pegged at cash prizes worth RM3,000, RM2,000 and RM1,000 respectively, inclusive of trophies, sashes, and other sponsored gifts. The pageant?s Top 7 will receive special prizes, and all other finalists will be given consolation cash prizes. Tickets are priced at RM3,000, RM2,000 and RM1,000 per table, with gallery tickets priced at just RM10. For more information on the Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan 2009, call the organising committee at 019-8404887 or 016-8116996 or the Unduk Ngadau office at KDCA at 088-720337.
